It was completely unreasonable for him to be so awake and Lily to be so profoundly asleep. He briefly debated getting up to wander the house, but that rarely seemed to help. Whereas he once would have simply ambled over to Sirius' room and found some friendly, moderately painful wait to rouse the other from sleep, now such tactics had the added risk of disturbing Remus. It briefly crossed his mind that even if Sirius was awake, it was entirely possible that the wakeful folks in Sirius' bed might be preoccupied with something far more entertaining, anyway. Well - not that Sirius wouldn't deserve such a well-timed interruption for the number of times he had so casually ambled into their dorm room when he knew perfectly well James was up there with a girl. But there was Remus to think of, and James was pretty certain it might give the poor man a heart attack. Well, maybe he could knock. Quietly.
James was reaching for his wand when his fingers bumped against the table in the dark. His wand was sitting atop the journal he rarely used. Now there was an idea. It was probably the closest thing to those mirrors they used to use. And it was worth a shot - he might not have been sleepy, but James was plenty comfortable right where he was. Plucking up his wand for a bit of dim light, he tucked it behind his ear to properly illuminate the journal in his hands.
Hey-
you awake over there?
I can't sleep and Lily's dead to the world. And I figured barging in on you and Remus making sweet, sweet love would be far too traumatic for Remus. After all, he's already died once.
